Arrival of HMT Dunera at Sydney
Frank McMahon was part of the military guard that witnessed the arrival of the HMT Dunera at Sydney on 6 September 1940. On board were 2,542 detainees shipped from Britain, mostly people of German or Austrian descent, and many of them Jewish refugees, who had been deported by the British Government because they were wrongly considered a threat to security. Following the scandal that arose when the circumstances of their deportation and their ill-treatment on the voyage became known, the deportees were released.
Frank can be seen in the press clipping below, circled.
